Customer: I have a 2004 cat skid steer model 287 with a 4 cyl. perkins diesel. it all of a sudden started blowing white smoke. smells like unburned fuel. the air cleaners are new and it isnt runnung rough or lacking power. could the turbo be an issue or is there someplace else I .
No to the oil- but we may have the fix. Talked to a mechanic today that said to check the hose coming off of the turbo on the exhaust side. If it has oil in it, bad turbo. If it has coolant in it, leaking head gasket on the exhaust side. Based off of the coolant smell and white smoke, we're guessing #2. It doesn't smell like burning oil. When cranking it has some white smoke but doesnt fire. I was suspecting air in the fuel system as the rubber fuel line from the tank was cracking. That is now replaced and the system was bleed out. If the white smoke persists, there may be a problem. Note: Refer to Troubleshooting, “Cat ET Service Features” for information about service features. Probable Causes. Active codes. Oil or fuel in the exhaust system. Cold mode operation (if applicable). Refer to “Cold Mode Operation” within the Systems Operation, “General Information”.If you are adding oil and if you have signs of oil coming out of the crankcase vent or blow-by tube, it leans towards excessive blow-by in the engine caused by either a piston or ring problem, or possible head gasket issue. You can have a blow-by test done by your local Dealer or any shop that does have a blow-by meter.
